How to Water Your Lawn Properly this Summer

A healthy lawn starts with proper watering. While fertilization and weed control are important, watering habits play one of the biggest roles in how your turf handles heat, drought, and overall stress throughout the summer.

Every property is a little different depending on soil type, sun exposure, slope and irrigation setup, but these foundational watering practices are a great place to start. The key is learning how your lawn responds and adjusting as needed throughout the season.

Water Deeply, Not Daily

One of the best things you can do for your lawn is water deeply and less often. Frequent shallow watering encourages roots to stay near the surface, making turf weaker and more dependent on constant moisture.

Instead, allow the soil to dry slightly between watering cycles. This encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil in search of water and nutrients, resulting in a healthier, more drought-tolerant lawn.

For most lawns in our area, watering every other day is typically a good starting point and aligns well with the City of Bozeman’s watering recommendations, City of Belgrade’s watering recommendations, and City of Livingston’s watering recommendations.

The Best Time to Water

Morning is by far the ideal time to run your sprinklers – typically between 5:00am and 8:00am.

Cooler morning temperatures help reduce water loss from evaporation. Morning watering also gives grass blades time to dry during the day, which helps reduce the risk of lawn diseases and fungal issues.

How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?

Most cool-season lawns need about 1½ inches of water per week during the growing season.

As a starting point, many sprinkler zones need approximately 30 minutes per cycle when watering deeply every other day. However, every irrigation system is different, so it’s important to measure output rather than guessing.

A simple tuna can or measuring cup placed in your lawn can help determine how much water your sprinklers are actually applying. If you’d like help measuring your irrigation coverage, ask your Yard Guard technician or contact our office for a measuring cup.

Adjustments may need to be made throughout the season depending on heat, sun exposure, or specific dry spots in the lawn.

Don’t Ignore Rainfall

The goal is not simply to run sprinklers – it’s to make sure your lawn receives the correct total amount of water each week.

If a rainstorm delivers roughly ½ inch of moisture, you can usually skip your next scheduled watering cycle. Monitoring rainfall throughout the season can significantly improve water efficiency and help avoid overwatering.

Healthy Soil Holds More Water

Watering practices are only part of the equation. Soil health plays a huge role in how efficiently your lawn uses moisture.

Soils rich in organic material retain water more effectively, reduce compaction, and allow water to penetrate deeper into the root zone. This is one of the major focuses of our Blended Organic Lawn Care Program — building healthier soil that naturally supports stronger turf and improved moisture retention.

Water Saver Applications

With drought concerns continuing across Montana, efficient watering is becoming more important every year.

That’s why we now offer our Water Saver application, designed to help lawns retain moisture more effectively during hot summer conditions. While some products advertise water reductions up to 50%, most industry results typically fall closer to 20–25% reduced water usage while still maintaining lawn quality.

We’ve seen encouraging results from industry testing and are excited to continue evaluating performance locally here in Southwest Montana.

At the end of the day, there’s no perfect one-size-fits-all watering schedule. Your lawn is a living system that changes throughout the season. Start with these foundational practices, pay attention to how your turf responds, and make adjustments as needed.

And if you ever have questions about watering, irrigation timing, or drought stress, our team is always happy to help.
